Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•My mom says that people who don't have "value" don't deserve to live and that "depression" is just an excuse for laziness. What's is your rebuttal for it?
1·19 days agoShe’s giving you the most difficult life lesson. I am almost 40 and to this day I dread to ‘actively hear’ many words my dad has to say about me or my decisions. It’s a difficult lesson because they are our caregivers and as such they did many good deeds. But at some point we need to put our own mental health above anyone else’s rant, rage, or toxicity. We don’t owe them shit. After that leap, you may be able to come back to the issue that they were addressing with their comments and reflect upon the issue itself on your own and/ or with the help of others (friends, therapist, chatgpt?? I wouldn’t recommend the latter but it may be a good starting point and better than nothing…)

Open Source@lemmy.ml•FFmpeg to Google: Fund Us or Stop Sending Bugs
6·2 months agoSome GPLv2 projects monetize by selling: support, extension via custom features, or simply the permission for a commercial use. This is possible, and it’s what I called “the legalese package”. Imagine ffmpeg being able to charge every year any amount they want to the biggest clients, like GAFAM. Yet you’re still able to use it non commercially… To be fair, there’re some middle uses, that get the disadvantage of having to break the license or ask for permission. For example, if you create anything with ffmpeg, then as an indie dev you’d need to launch your product breaking the license or paying them… But even so, situation is manageable (e.g. ffmpeg could spare you and/ or give a 1 year permission to small businesses)

Open Source@lemmy.ml•FFmpeg to Google: Fund Us or Stop Sending Bugs

If I understand correctly the biggest issue for FFMPEG and other projects is not only the Google and Microsoft that use them without giving back, but their chosen License. They gave permission to corporations to do this. One of the potential ways to fix this situation, is to change the license. For example from LGPL to AGPL. And then they can sell the legalese package of allowing them to break their license. The biggest difficulty is that, as a project, they’d need consent from every past and future contributors. So, yeah. I get it. This is a mess.
It would be way more easier if more corporations donated to open source projects… There’s too much labour that’s invisible
I was thinking on hosting a static site, renting my own VPS. I always write in markdown, so
pandocwould suffice (even if it were just a starting point…) Since I’d be using markdown, the content is highly transferable (e.g. when I wanted to move onto Publii, Ghost or other engine). In your case, I’d recommend checking https://writefreely.org/
The goal is on documentation itself. There’s technical stuff that I do, combining the docs of 2 or more software pieces. These don’t have much space anywhere. At some point, I have been doing this with the assistance of AI. That’s why I started to wonder, maybe it’s not worth the effort… But that’s a negative thought I might just put aside. I am very thankful for all the inspiring and motivating answers I am getting here.

21·6 months agoThat’s awful, it means I would get my photo id stolen hundreds of times per day, or there’s also thisfacedoesntexists… and won’t work. For many reasons. Not all websites require an account. And even those that do, when they ask for “personal verification” (like dating apps) have a hard time to implement just that. Most “serious” cases use human review of the photo and a video that has your face and you move in and out of an oval shape…

Only the failed attempts could be a Denial Of Service and throw you out. So, at least add an ever increasing delay to those. Fail2ban is important.

“Martin Fierro” by Jose Hernandez. Me and all my classmates thought it would be the most boring book. We were surprised. And it was full of teachings for soon-to-be adults.
