Today I’m using Alltrails and also Trailforks to find hiking and mtb trails. However, I’m also trying to replace as many proprietary apps and services with open source alternatives. So, what is the best open source alternatives to Alltrails and Trailforks?
I have seen Wanderer which looks like what I’m looking for, but perhaps there are other alternatives with more users/trails or something else that makes it better?
Endurain is, as I understand it, for self-hosting which is nice but I also want to see trails that other people have uploaded in order to be inspired and find good trails when I visit a new place.
Are there any other sites I should consider?
I’ve enjoyed Hiking Project, but my needs are pretty simple and don’t know if it has the features you are looking for
I’ve been impressed with OSM’s https://opentrailmap.us/
but it doesn’t have the ratings/uploads/discussion that something like alltrails has. might be cool to have a fediverse/activitypub application using OSMtrails data.
Is it focused on US? If so, I will not be able to use it much since I live in Europe.
Wanderer is pretty fun, more user curated things, some are shitty some are high quality, depends, plus you can just contrubute your route too! And the fact that it’s activity pub powered is a nice bonus
Yeah, I want to be able to upload my trails as well. My plan is to set up Endurain on my server and transfer everything from Garmin to my server. Then I can select trails and upload to Wanderer or other sites. That way I will be in control of all hiking/running/mtb that I do but I will still contribute to the community by adding routes.
I can’t help on the open source side but I find Komoot to be more user friendly and open. For example you can download GPX files without a subscription to then make trail bookmarks in open source apps like CoMaps.
Komoot had several routes around my area so it can definitely be useful.
Osmand has official hiking and biking routes but not like what you or I want. Wanderer is the immich of routes.
Looks like Wanderer will be my choice.
I haven’t used alltrails since they started requiring login. I generally find trail information from the website or in person visitor center of the relevant park/conservation district/forrest service/whatever. Sometimes I’ll map out those points on Organic Maps manually if I know I’ll need to reference the map while out of cell signal.
Yeah, I usually take a photo of the trails on the information board or at the visitor center but in Sweden we are free to wander everywhere so there is no official info about many of the trails here. Of course all big trails can be found online and many other exist in some way on Internet but that information is scattered.
