I’ve been running OpenAltFinder for almost 16 months now, and received quite a bit of positive feedback. The directory has also grown substantially. Over the last few months I’ve been receiving more and more submissions that were AI-assisted/vibe-coded.
Personally I’m a bit skeptical (both quality wise, and longevity wise), but I also want to give everyone a chance to showcase what they’ve build. I had already added an “AI-assisted” label, but right now the majority of submissions include that label.
To counter this, I decided to build an AI-free version of it over at: https://noai.openaltfinder.com/, inspired by duckduckgo.
Nice.
Some of the alternatives are vibecoded as hell, any chance showing vibecode score ?
With this kind of tool : https://www.vibedetect.io/
The main detector at the moment is looking at the contributors in their commits. But you’re right, it will require some more detection.
Looks cool but I din’t like the framing. Yes, X is an alternative to Y but X is a valid option just by itself. By framing it like that it somehow sits always in the shadow of the proprietary software.
It’s a fair point, the original idea was to make it easier for people to switch to open source software by framing it as “I’m looking for an X alternative, so here’s A, B and C”. But I can see the concern around that as well.
