Before I read the article, I’m going to guess the answer is:
Because MasterCard gave them lots of dollary-doos!
How it went:
Officially I was wrong:
“We wanted it to be the right partner, with the right long-term commitment, with the same values as McLaren, and a brand that we felt could add value off the track,”
Unofficially though…:
The Mastercard deal is estimated to be in the region of $100 million per season
Thanks for playing!
a brand that we felt could add value off the track
I mean it’s right there in the official statement if you squint.
The team’s official name will become ‘McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team’ from next season.
Boo!
A heritage team like McLaren or Ferrari should not do title sponsorships IMO.
I agree, but there is no room for romance in capitalism. If there is over $100m on the table they’re not turning it down. Especially since the combination of the budget cap and the exploding popularity post-DTS has turned F1 from a marketing money sink into a for-profit venture.
Ferrari was Marlboro-Ferrari for years. As soon as Enzo died, they painted the cars Marlboro red and named it rosso corsa.
