  • Pretty much. I’m a data hoarder, to a degree. My homebuilt, Ship of Theseus NAS is about 15 years old, and it contains data going back over 20. I save everything I produce.

I figure that one day, this data of mine will be fed into a system for future use, in the vein of how they construct people in the Star Trek Holodeck. So, I feel it’s up to me to curate that data, and be sure it’s accurate and reflects who I am.

These days it’s obvious that it will eventually be turned into training data for an LLM, but then at least, my data will have some structure and personality to it. Maybe someday a joke will be cracked for someone that came from a pattern I established. Probably not, but one can dream.

  • I understand the authors reasons, but for me personally, having paid for the app, I’ll use it until it no longer suits my needs. Right now it does early what I need and does not cause me any issues. As soon as the enshittification hits me though, I’ll abandon it for something else. I also would not recommend someone purchase it, given the new pricing, and the availability of free alternatives. Had they been there when I paid for Plex, I’d be using them instead.

  • Yes and no, I only buy refurbs these days, so long as they work out of the box, they have been far more reliable than retail drives from a box store.

Definitely higher incidents of DOA drives, but the ones that work, have been pretty solid.

Still don’t trust spinning rust, so in addition to dual parity raid, I also have a full backup copy. But I no longer have reservations about refurb drives…

  • No, everything I have is connected to the internet anyway so has far more easily compromised vectors. If I had any data sensitive enough I would not trust any security other than physical with it. I assume with physical access, a motivated enough attacker could gain access, there’s loopholes in everything.

So, if I had that sort of data, it would be on an offline machine, no wireless, never connected to a network. I would only trust it in so far as I could guarantee I am the only one who can access it.

  • They can be very useful and a lot of fun to interact with, but I think of them like hard drugs. You better sure as shit know what you are dealing with because you might think you are in control, until you are homeless, friendless and screaming at people on the street.

Seriously, they take a strong mind to deal with, they are better manipulators than any human I’ve come across. They do it with sycophancy, every idea and concept is some new truth you alone discovered, and the world needs to know about right now! You are so special and unseen after all…

  • Right, I run almost the same stack as this guy, but on a dumpster dive office PC turned into my NAS, and three used, micro form factor pc’s I picked up for 60 bucks. My most expensive thing is the hot swap silverstone case for the refurb 4 and 10tb hdds.

Also, why pfsense when opnsense exists (j/k, just my preference).

  • Boys can also develop negative images of themselves, they are actively preyed upon as well. There are different sets of challenges for the genders, but they are there for both.

I don’t have girls so it’s hard to say. But I do work to make sure they understand that people that come for them, are only saying something about themselves. We work hard to make sure they know the difference between online abusive drama and reality and help them choose spaces that are positive.
