Serious question, how do you afford that much travel, or am I just that poor?

Sort of? I’m a team lead (middle management) so I have a vested interest in seeing my team is paid as high as possible. As part of goal planning we have frank discussions of certifications, training AND salary. That includes discussing where I’m at and what it took to get there. Its pushed folks who otherwise would be content with what the company gives them and gives them a roadmap to move up.

Just know, on that day, that neighbour wanted nothing more than to trade spots with you for a week.

Tbf, this is not super local specific necessarily. I definitely pass judgement in fellow coworker dads who show up to work a week after they have their new born. When I chat with them about how nights are going and they say “oh fine, I just sleep in the basement so the baby doesn’t wake me” I want to throttle their weak asses.

Much of it is definitely cultural. Its made worse that we work at a company that offers dads two months full pay and live in a country with employment insurance benefits for parents that can be split over 18 months.

That does make sense, though I think modern hearing aids actually have Bluetooth capabilities so that the conversation is right through the hearing aid itself. Kinda wild.
