  • Couple reasons:

    • I don’t like many of the recent developments in the tech industry and how they affect my job. For example the increasing use of generative AI, both for coding and having to implement AI features everywhere.
    • Sorta related to the first point, but I don’t know if I’m able and willing to keep up with the pace of new technologies, frameworks etc for the rest of my working life. It feels like the software development world is getting more fragmented every year. With every other project, I’m being asked to use some framework or language I’ve never used before. Due to that, I’m never really getting proficient at anything. Of course there are companies where I’d only work with a single set of tools for a long time, but that would then have the disadvantage of having hyper-specific knowledge which would make it harder to find a new job that would fit my skills.
    • I’m currently working from home, which I do like, but if I ever lose my job, it’ll be difficult to find another job that doesn’t require me regularly working in an office. I don’t want another office job. At this point I’d actually much prefer a job where I’d be out and about, preferrably in nature.
    • The job market in IT has become quite tough here, very different from when I started. I think I might have difficulty competing with some of the more experienced and motivated devs.

My current workplace is pretty good and I don’t think I’ll quit any time soon. But they’re struggling in the current economy, so I might lose my job at some point anyway. If that happens, I’ll definitely consider my options about what to do next.

  • If you do decide to go (and I can certainly see why you would), you definitely shouldn’t try to apply for asylum, but get a proper work visa for your country of choice. No country currently accepts asylum applications from Americans as far as I’m aware, certainly nowhere in Europe. And even if you somehow managed to do that, coming here as a refugee is no pleasant experience. You’d spend at least a couple months living in poor, very crammed conditions among people from countries where homophobia is much more widespread than in the US.

If I ever decide to leave Europe, my plan was always to go to New Zealand. Seems like a good place to escape global geopolitics and/or a possible WW3.

  • How are the ecosystems? Does the choice of brand lock you in or out of particular titles? I suspect his main goal is to play gorilla tag and similar.

The Quest has its own ecosystem of native VR games that run directly on the device. You need to create a Meta account to use the headset. However, it’s possible to sideload apps to it and you can stream PCVR games to the Quest.

Is Metaquest 3 an objectively good/decent product? What are some viable alternatives?

As of right now, the Quest 3 is a decent-choice hardware-wise, probably the best in terms of pure value and it has the largest userbase. The big downside is that it’s made by Meta. It’s also a bit of an unfortunate time to buy a VR-headset, as it looks like the upcoming Steam Frame will be a better choice, once it releases. If your kids birthday is still a few months away, it might be worth waiting for a bit before buying anything. It’s completely unknown when the Steam Frame will release though.

Something like a Pico Neo 3 could potentially be an alternative if you want to avoid Meta. For purely PCVR, there is also the Valve Index, but that’s more of an enthusiast-level device that requires a more complex setup using base stations for tracking.

He’s got a decent phone and a half-decent PC. Will the same headset work for both?

The PC should work. It doesn’t stream phone games.

How much HPU (if any) is required to drive one of these decently?

GPU I assume? Well, for one thing, it can run games standalone, though those games won’t have impressive graphics. For PCVR streaming, I’d recommend at least something like a 1070, preferrably something much better.

  • They have been doing this for years and only yesterday, I decided that I won’t tolerate their behavior.

You write you won’t tolerate their behaviour anymore, but only 2 sentences later you write that you’re hoping that they’ll stop picking on you if you do this. That’s not just tolerating their behaviour, that’s encouraging it.

I decided that I need to get a stable grade first, no matter what.

Depriving yourself of sleep will be extremely detrimental to your mental and academic performance. That’s just biology and no amount of “grindset” can change that.

  • Upon considering my routine, I found out that If I need to do well in my studies and overall life, I can allocate myself only 4 hours of sleep at most. And I need to continue this for at least 4 years.

Then you need to reconsider your lifestyle and not your basic biological need for sleep. Ignoring the latter will make you miserable and ill very quickly, along with being so detrimental to your academic performance that any time gained will be worthless.

  • Those “overpriced” products in your local stores?

    You’re supporting your neighbors.

Depends. If I wanted to buy some cables locally, it’d have to be at the electronics store the next town over. It’s part of a chain that was just purchased by a Chinese megacorporation. They sell a single brand of shoddy quality cables for a huge markup, all made in China. At that point, the more ethical choice would be to purchase some Made in Europe cables online (just as pricey, but at least my money won’t go to China).

  • Naming generations like that wasn’t really a thing in Germany until American pop-culture brought it over, so these days we also use Millenial, Gen-Z and so on. That said, an important generational divide was those born before WW2 and the generation immediately after. When the latter people became adults, they started to question what their parents were doing during the nazi era and how it could be that former members of the nazi party still held public positions in Germany. They started a protest movement that would finally start Germany properly working through and taking responsibility for the crimes of the nazi era.

  • From your list, I’ve only watched Inuyashiki, which I do like, but it’s pretty different. That said, it’s a series I’d recommend to most people. It has a little bit of everything: Drama, comedy, slice of life, action and above all, a ton of well-written, interesting and, well, eccentric characters. Definitely helps if you like Japanese folklore and mythical creatures as well.

If you’ve watched “The Tatami Galaxy”, that’s by the same author and kind of has the same feel and philosophy. But The Eccentric Family has a more coherent narrative and is a bit more down to earth.
