Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I felt so betrayed when I found out Germany isn't called Germany in Germany
7·1 month agoWell in Dutch they call themselves Nederlanders or Hollanders. Though Hollanders is technically only correct if they are from the Dutch province North-Holland or South-Holland
here is a CGP Grey video about the difference between Holland and the Netherlands https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE_IUPInEuc
And the reason why the Netherlands is also known as Holland is basically before the unification of the Low Lands every province was a self governing state and Holland was the richest province. Hence why most traders who went abroad from the Low Lands were people from Holland. It’s therefore why people abroad would call the Low Lands Holland since Hollanders were the only people from the Low Lands they met and and after the Netherlands was formed the name Holland for that area stuck in many languages.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I felt so betrayed when I found out Germany isn't called Germany in Germany
20·1 month agoIt’s not really a mix-up. More a continuation of an old name for the language spoken in the Netherlands. The Dutch centuries ago called their language Diets/Duuts/Duits which means something like Germanic. This was before the countries Germany and the Netherlands existed.
Diets is not a single language but a name for all the different regional languages spoken in the low lands. Diets is also known as Middle Dutch. The name was used to differentiate the languages from the Romance languages.
Hence why the English called the people of the low lands Dutch since the people of the low lands said they were speakers of Diets/Duuts/Duits.
Also in the Dutch national anthem there is a line that says “Ben ik van Duitsen bloed” “I am of Dutch/Deutsche blood” which does not refer to modern day Deutschland but to what all Germanic people in the low lands, what is now present day Netherlands, would call themselves back then.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•"Flushable wipes"; "dishwasher-safe"; "odourless" - What are some other blatant lies that companies get away with?

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•It's quite impressive that most English speakers across the world understand each other, despite variations in accents/dialects
9·2 months agoYea I live in the Netherlands and there is a fishing village just a 15 minute bike ride away from me. If the people there speak in their own dialect I can’t understand anything they say. If I drive to the north to the province Friesland, less than 100 km away, they have their own official language besides Dutch that only around 400k speak. That’s less people than half of the inhabitants of Amsterdam yet Frisian is fully recognized and official and you can spend your daily life there without speaking a word Dutch even though you are still in the Netherlands. Some kids there don’t even learn their first Dutch words until they go to school.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you automated 95% of your job, but still had to report to an office/cubicle, what would you do with your (40hrs)time?
11·2 months agoEducate yourself and learn a new skill that is useful for the job you really want, assume this doesn’t last long and that you might get fired or laid off one day. I remember a story on reddit about some guy who had outsourced his job to India. The guy only played videogames the entire day every day, after a few years the gig was up and he was fired. Dude had a hard time finding a new job since his skill set and knowledge base was several years behind of where his field had advanced to. Don’t waste this opportunity, sure play some games, fiddle around now and then but use most of the free time to improve yourself.
If I was in your situation I would just learn how to make videogames and then eventually try to release one on Steam made entirely during the boss’ time.
It was always two flags for the last couple of seasons.
Well in the past it used to be one flag and they did let celebs wave it. In 2018 during the Canadian GP Winnie Harlow waved the checkered flag a lap too early and thus the race had to end a lap earlier. It wasn’t her fault though, she was instructed to wave it. Guess they don’t trust the stewards anymore to not be distracted by the presence of a celeb. I mean I would if I was standing next to Ana de Armas

89·2 months agoCongrats Lando. He can basically thank Kimi for the championship. If Kimi didn’t crash into Max in Austria, Max would have surely won it. Max had despite the shitbox in the first half of the season a pretty clean season, while McLaren had two crashes with no one else to blame but themselves.
Edit: forgot this one, Kimi cutting off Piastri in Brazil. Kimi is truly the Goat
