I dig the square clock, and am now sad that the numbers can’t be put into the corners on a real clock. Unless they’re shifted from the usual position.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would be the most optimal way to have good bodily nutrition with the lowest cost per meal?
3·4 days agoSpeaking of modifications, soy sauce in vinaigrette salad is great. A few drops of Worcestershire sauce would probably be awesome, too.

1·4 days agoI’d be happy to not cite ‘debunked and dated’ research, except I can’t cite debunking and updated research for the lack of it in my life.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Who are some widely loved fictional characters that would be hated if they were real?
3·4 days agoThat happens to be the video that I linked. Alexander then provides some more musings on Larry David and the nature of ‘Seinfeld’ and ‘CYE’.

8·4 days agoTry figuring out cheapest vegetables available year-round, from which you can make a salad. In the US, this probably includes corn. Where I am, it’s potato, carrots, and beets, which coincidentally make a traditional salad. I boil a pot of them once or twice a week, and chop them in large-ish cubes right before a meal, so preparation takes very little time. Of course, I typically add onions, mayonnaise, maybe herbs.
I’m currently spending about twenty bucks a week on food, and that’s only because I’ve been too lazy to prepare the vegetables, making sandwiches instead.

6·4 days agoThe other dude is correct about proteins: legumes and cereals both have them, the issue is that they each have only some of the essential amino acids, while the body needs a certain proportion of them. But legumes and cereals combined have all those acids, so they supply the protein. That’s the whole idea of the legumes+cereals diet.

7·4 days agoNot necessarily just rice. The thing is that both beans and cereals contain protein, but each has only some of the essential amino acids, while human body consumes these acids in a particular proportion. Well whaddayaknow, beans and cereals in combination have all of those acids, complementing each other. So wheat or other cereals also work instead of rice.
They even have about 10% protein, which is on par with sausages and such.

91·4 days agoThe main characters of ‘Friends’, perhaps excluding Phoebe Buffay. Once you try to figure out their morals, it’s baffling how they can be considered even half decent people.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Who are some widely loved fictional characters that would be hated if they were real?
2·4 days agoGeorge is entirely built on the premise of doing minor things that a normal person wouldn’t consider doing: he’s a fictionalized Larry David, and ‘almost everything’ of his antics comes from David’s real experiences. As you probably know, David later did another whole show on the same premise: ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’.

21·4 days agoI’m continually amazed that characters of ‘Seinfeld’ are considered awful, while those in ‘Friends’ are supposedly fine. The latter are prime fit for an answer to this post, if one digs into their morals a little.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Some of you guys haven't used luarocks and it shows
3·7 days agoThere’s a Lua module for Nginx, and in particular OpenResty bundles those two. Lua is snappy as hell, especially in the LuaJIT variant, and uses very little memory — so when it’s paired with Nginx, one could probably run a performant web app on a toaster.

2·7 days agoLua works smooth like butter with binary libraries written in C (since it’s made to be embeddable in C), but also it’s so fast that for many things people just do libraries in plain Lua.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What old movies hold up because of a lack of special effects or because clever use of effects?
2·10 days agoTechnically the original ‘Dracula’ is Austrian/Hungarian film ‘Dracula’s Death’, released in either 1921 or 1923. Considering that Dracula is either the most- or second-most-frequently adapted character ever, I wouldn’t be surprised if more films were made between this one and the 1931 one.
Also, funny thing, a Spanish-language version of ‘Dracula’ was filmed simultaneously with the 1931 film, on the same sets. It’s considered better made, because the crew had access to the dailies of the English version and could adjust the direction based on the flaws they noticed.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does anyone have experience cutting their own hair? Should I cut my own hair?
5·10 days agoWith long hair, you have two particular easy opportunities:
-
Just trim only the temples with a trimmer, and let the rest grow as it pleases. Or cut the ends to some length that makes sense. This way you can have a ponytail, or loose hair if that’s your style, and look okay.
-
Or, get a ‘long mohawk’: have a barber buzz the sides so that you have the back and top in a straight wide stripe, then tie a ponytail and shave the sides with a trimmer once every week or two. This is more fit for dudes, though there are photos of gals in image search too. The benefit of this style is that it’s more chilly than a full head of hair, while also being low-maintenance.

Formula 1@lemmy.world•Bortoleto's Sprint Crash, as seen from the stands
22·10 days agoSorry for the previous reply, perhaps I misunderstood what you’re saying. Indeed, from what I’ve seen braking was not the issue, he lost the rear right after slapping the wing closed and turning the car, likely before he started braking.

4·10 days agoI’m more wondering about the view from Albon’s car, as it sure looked like he might’ve pissed himself there.
That one is pretty good, though the Roman numerals are rather busy and uneven.
This one is closer, though now I have to wonder if all non-square rectangular clocks have an old-timey whiff for me, or it’s just the border here:
This is also impressive:
