They’re usually too busy asking for us to ‘return the slab’ to talk about computers.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•At what point does a person become an "adult"?English
2·24 days agoUntil relatively recently, in common law and some civil law countries you weren’t fully autonomous from your gaurdian until you turned 21. At which point you no longer needed a gaurdians approval to make some legally binding decisions. Some institutions (eg car rental & insurance companies) find 25 to be the cut off for risky behavior. However, these measures don’t capture emotional maturity as I’ve met people in their 50s that still act like teenagers.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you think of homeschooling?English
7·25 days agoEvery homeschooled person I’ve met has lacked all tact but YMMV. I haven’t met anyone that was homschooled after leaving university so no clue if that improves over time.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was the last live theater performance that you saw?English
2·1 month agoA college rendition of Ken Ludwig’s The Game’s Afoot. The first half was a little slow but the second half picked up considerably. Before that was A Lucky Stiff; it was quite silly but a fun watch.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What search engine do you guys use?English
5·2 months agoNo ai ddg has been a decent general search engine, but if I can’t find something I’ll us marginalia, mojeek, alltheinternet, and even yandex (if I’m desperate). For your research: InstallGentoo Wiki has a fairly comprehensive list of search engines albeit not the most up to date; Seirdy has a blog post reviewing many search engines including some more niche ones; and The Search Engine Map illustrates which engines use what index.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How often are your windows open? What about during Winter? or during Summer? Do you open windows to let in fresh air?English
2·3 months agoHow old is stoßlüften? I know people that are always opening windows and telling their kids to go outside to “blow the stink off” and while they have german ancestry it would be from over a hundred years ago.

Those kneeling office chairs really hurt my knees, I’m too tall to use saddle chairs at a regular desk and with exercise balls its hard for me to get the height right. As far as chairs go what helped me was finding a chair with adjustible lumbar support, and adjustible spring tension on reclining. Steelcase used to offer all of these features but it looks like they don’t have as much adjustment now. I’ve heard good things about Herman Miller but I’ve never tried them. As for lifestyle changes: a heating pad to loosen cramps, free weights to strengthen, and a foam roller to help realign the spine have all helped me. ymmv obv.
