I like learning new tech too, but if we’re being realistic then we have to admit that the fediverse will not grow unless we spoon feed it to people. Maybe we don’t want it to grow that much. That’s a conversation we could have. But we should acknowledge that there are tradeoffs here

These are good ideas. Hopefully something like that happens one day. In addition to events it would be nice if there were more in-person groups (eg for a class or local community group) that chose to connect online primarily through the Fediverse. You see that kind of thing happening with Discord. It would be good if we could do something similar here.

Stuff like this is why Bluesky is more popular than Mastodon. We need to find a way to fix these little quirks if we are serious about growing the fediverse

I think a simple ‘popular’ or ‘trending’ feed wouldn’t need user tracking. Or if it was really needed to be customized maybe users could opt into share what topics they are interested in when they sign up

Yeah. The OS based biometric model of verification definitely has some advantages over a service-by-service form of verification (so long as it’s done in a way that doesn’t make it easier to fingerprint based on device). The biggest concern I’d have though would be what this might do to niche operating systems, like Linux distros or Graphene OS. Will they be forced to enable age verification as well, and if so will they have the means to do that?

The comparison to credit card verification is interesting though and intuitively it seems like it would make it easier for niche operating systems to manage these requirements, since they could largely outsource that functionality (in the same way most websites outsource the handling of credit card information). This model still might make it easier for governments to profile people though. I’d be interested to hear what a privacy expert has to say about the viability or tradeoffs with a model like that.

I agree that if you can get enough parents onboard with the no cell phone rule then it’s not a problem. But there’s a bit of a coordination problem there so that might not be achievable in all circumstances

I’m relatively young so I can attest to the fact that, even when I was in high-school, not having a phone would put you at a social disadvantage. Thats how kids kept in touch out of school hours and coordinated social events. It’s not ideal but thats how things work now.

This sounds like a much better strategy than the Australian model of simply scanning your face and using AI to guess your age

Fair point. I’m sure if there was a social media ban the fediverse would be a low priority. That said I still don’t see how it would be financially unviable because like I mentioned earlier most instances already have an application process
