Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a joke or reference in a piece of media that you saw but didn't understand until years or even decades later?
2·5 days agoThe same phenomenon has been identified even in the UK where cultural divides and differences are present in media and often discussed in terms of accuracy or inaccuracy. Their use and abuse.
I can only imagine in a place like the US, which is on such a different scale, that the problem is going to be even wider, more pervasive due to the dominance of the media, and more infuriating given some of the passionate views people have on their home territory.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a joke or reference in a piece of media that you saw but didn't understand until years or even decades later?
2·5 days agoApparently, now I’ve stopped to check, it’s a reference to Tacobell using the word “Grande” on their menus, and the hospital is called Taco Bellevue, so yeah, it is the Taco Bell dog 😃
Not being American, I had no understanding of these cultural points.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a joke or reference in a piece of media that you saw but didn't understand until years or even decades later?
4·7 days agoIn the Futurama episode where Leela gets blinded there’s another patient in the hospital who asks “Doctor, how’s my cyst?”
The little Doctor, who appears to be an anthro-Chihuahua says “Grande”
I still have no idea what this is about.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•When you get older you lose the ability to do things quietly, such as fart, or let young people live their lives.
51·10 days agoI don’t see your implied contradiction here.
They said they’re not interested in other people’s shot whilst responding to a shower thought about their shit. 💁♂️

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•My therapist says she might have to report my abusive family to the authorities. How do I avoid being reported so the cops don't show up and make everything worse?
9·18 days agoYeah, totally fair. Totally not the ideal purpose of therapy.
When they’re caught between your best interests and the law, the best they can do it give you an informed choice of what to share and what not to share.

161·18 days agoWant to point out that you can have this conversation with your therapist without triggering any disclosure alarms.
Find out what you can and can’t say.
For example, you can talk about how “the stress of home” effects you without saying what actions of others are.
Might feel like tip toeing, could also get you through whilst staying on the fine line

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•When do you think we'll be able to harness nuclear fusion as a viable source of energy?
1·26 days agoThe flaw in this thinking is that massive destruction and extinction is one of the ways natural systems maintain themselves.
The earth has never been in homeostasis, 99.9% of species are extinct, and the planet is a lot more likely to survive than humans are.
our conduct is perfectly natural and playing out a lot faster than most natural systems that take millions of years to extinct a species sometimes
