  • I mean it probably does cover that, one concept is bridging (connections between different groups, someone you met by chance not because they’re your neighbor) and political polarization has actually increased due to our voting system.

Similarly I’d bet a lot of people only called themselves christian because it really wasn’t a choice (upbringing, peer/family/institution pressure, cognitive dissonance), the sort of thing that makes a lot less sense in recent years where hypocrisy is on full display (be it politics, cover-ups, or megachurches).

For race, I think the most homogeneous communities that exist probably are still more alone today. A lot of the community options were built around places or conditions that disappeared and never recovered, or clubs that may still exist but don’t get new members.

  • I think there’s probably still room creatively, especially as a hobby.

I sort of see it as the opposite with software though, that popular options are bloated data-wise (and cost) and simple usage-wise, other options are small-ish data-wise but less user-friendly. It seems like the middleground (low data+easy-to-use) is less likely to exist, particularly for techniques that aren’t as shiny/new. In some cases, it really does seem like certain workflows don’t exist. (or perhaps for some things that we’ve seen before, implementations were always in-house rather than something that existed in a usable editor)

Which isn’t to say stuff like that will be easy, maybe doable with limitation and if libraries can take you half-way there.

  • Yes and yes. I’d prefer to disappear completely… including leaving less junk/mess to sort, though neither of those are happening. The best I can do is not buy things.

I can see the don’t-leave-me vs don’t-perceive-me aspect of death, though I think a lot of people using the phrase ‘die alone’ aren’t being quite that literal. Though I don’t have a better outlook with non-literal either. Hopeless.

  • Pattern recognition. Opposable thumbs. Kung-fu grip. Floor-sweeping. Can sometimes create something neat befitting the year 1997. Can chop and fry vegetables. Load/unloading dishwasher. Poorly-equipped operator of 2 wheels (250w assist), ~450 miles on the odometer and no current destinations (also too damn hot).

Those are the ingredients that make it hard for me to justify myself in context of escapist fantasies (as out there as brain-in-a-can, as realistic as intentional communities yet still intangible).

People like positive self-talk (everyone matters), though I feel it really clashes with the rent-seeking+papers-please reality that we find ourselves in. Disposable everything.

  • Nothing. I’m not spiritual, though I do sort of believe some things like that in a non-literal fashion. I don’t believe I am part of some sort of unity, though I would say that yeah in an abstract sense I am just a complex multi-cellular organism and in most cases cooperation with other multi-cellular organisms is preferred. With the systems how they are now though, I am not participating (even if it is to my own detriment).

Design? It would require a bunch things that likely won’t happen in my lifetime. Basically a transhumanist re-do. Get my brain somewhere and somewhen better, get it going again ideally with a mix of symbiosis+tech that allows existing comfortably. This could take a lot of forms too (many that others would find too alien/isolated), though not too hopeful about the future and that I could actually have a place in it.
