Oh, I see. In that case, I think the best we can do is set a good example. For example, I try not to let myself get drawn into childish arguments.

Downvoting just gives trolls the negative attention they want. Ignore, block, and/or report. That’s it. We can’t change human nature.

Saying or doing something hurtful to another person, because I don’t know what challenges they’re dealing with or what their past has been like.

Is there a middle ground? I don’t want wars, political nonsense, or disrespect of other cultures, but I do want drugs and burgers.

Theory: intelligent life will help the population and planet thrive.
Reality: lol no

Don’t try to apply reason/common sense/logic to ANY religion. You’ll end up with more questions than answers.
Besides, I was told that the point of the story was resisting temptation. God wanted to see if Adam and Eve could do that. Spoiler: they couldn’t.
Not really. I can enjoy a debate, IF the other person is doing so in good faith. Challenging, enlightening discussions are always welcome!
Generally speaking, if one of us can’t “agree to disagree” and happily change the subject, then it won’t be a good time.

Knowing how to “read the room” is just as important as any other information an intelligent person may possess. Just because I’m talking about a problem with my car doesn’t necessarily mean I want an exhaustive lecture on fuel pumps. Similarly, knowing how and when to correct someone without hurting their feelings is absolutely vital. Intelligence is a lot less useful if everyone thinks you’re a pedant or an asshole.

Basically I’ll be riding that high the rest of my life…
You were probably half-joking about this, but yes, you will.

You’re right; “technique” was a poor choice of words. I should have written “I’d suggest finding a different way to express yourself”.
That’s a good example of my point right there, actually. My wording was off, and I came across as rude when I didn’t intend to.

I’m okay with it under very limited conditions. To boil it down, I have to be 100% sure that they’re joking. For one thing, people say that shit seriously and then claim “it was just a joke”.
Without things like tone of voice and facial expression for people to go on, you’re gonna be misunderstood sooner rather than later. And yes, you might even find yourself banned. I’d suggest finding a different technique.

This next bit is long, but relevant:
Very true. I also found it to be of refreshingly high quality!

You’re right about the lack of diverse opinion. Still, so much of American media is center-right to far right, I feel like they’ve more than gotten their say. I see Lemmy as an oasis for opinions that are underexposed elsewhere.
If I want to read some tech bro rambling about how less privacy is good for us, or an “ordinary persons” opinion on how school shootings are the price we must pay for freedom, I can go virtually anywhere else.

A peanut butter pie. I ate the whole damn thing in one sitting. No regrets - that thing was good.

It happens from time to time. Post and comment more.

Yours makes me hungry!

Many artists post low-res versions of their work online, and charge for the hi-res ones. They know that the publicly available versions might be used for all sorts of purposes.
Another important distinction is that you aren’t profiting off a mere avatar. Profiting off of someone else’s work without permission is a big no no.
I don’t even remember where my avatar came from.

I think it’s a great rule!
To me, the links to alternate communities are essential. They allow you to set restrictions while still maintaining a helpful atmosphere. Sometimes, people have legitimate, good-faith questions, and don’t know where to ask them. Those links help demonstrate a real concern for the users. Well done!
I think it’s ridiculous that corporations are simultaneously spending billions on technology that they know doesn’t work. A smart CEO would wait for a real breakthrough, and then invest. Nobody gets it 100% right the very first time. WAIT. Nobody will care if you’re a late bloomer, as long as your software actually lives up to its advertising.
The technology has potential, but right now, potential is all it has.
