I use Gpoddersync to keep my phone and tablet in sync, but I have one podcast that keeps glitching out and redownloading over and over. Not sure why.

I own a Mode 7 Retro ii flip phone. Modern Android, tiny screen on the top, number pad on the bottom which I never use, and the dang thing fits nicely in my pocket and the screen never gets scratched. Faux leather on the outside. One of my profs literally calls me “Flip phone.” I do carry a tablet a lot of the time, so my phone is mostly for calls and podcasts. I doom scroll on the tablet.

I paid 24,000$ in tuition, why should kids get free college?” I think that, at some point, one guy has to be the first guy to benefit from progress, and all the people who didn’t benefit just have to suck it up. I would 100% pay a much higher tax rate if it meant that homelessness was gone, hunger was gone, kids got free education… I’m Canadian, so I don’t need to say this about health care. Yeah, I paid an awful lot of mortgage, but if someone else gets a free house? Good!
phanto@lemmy.cato Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there a federated or open source search engine alternative?4·1 month agoI’ve taken a couple of shots at yacy, but have little luck. It’s possible to self host a searxng in docker that uses almost no resources. I use a server, but a buddy literally has it load on startup in his Windows.
I’ve run yacy and searxng, and I find yacy flaky. I get really random search results, often not useful at all. I like Searxng though, although once in a while I have to hit refresh to get my result. Probably a simple fix, I’ve just never bothered to go down the rabbit hole.

A guy wearing cool shades. Me? It felt like 10 pounds strapped to my face in such a way I had to look straight up to sort of see a blurry, blocky video through a screen door. This had to be plugged into a DVD player or a VHS player (yes, really) with three separate cords, but still also ate four AAs more than once an hour, and had built in earbuds in exactly the wrong size. Also, there was a separate cord to a remote control that managed to get tangled up very easily despite being too short to fit in a pocket while the goggles were on your head, so I just kinda looped it over my shoulders. Claimed to have a 3D mode. Never found it. 300$ well spent.
phanto@lemmy.cato Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Help me selfhosted, I'm in over my head!English4·2 months agoI tried to start with OpenStack. Oof. Yup. Proxmox.
There are a lot of good guides. I run almost everything on proxmox these days, even virtualized my Windows, and (after a lot of messing around) got my GPU passed through for when I game.

Tried it again today, same deal. Then, I tried a third time and actually hit the “Save” button this time… Yeah, I think Jellyfin was never the problem.
phanto@lemmy.cato Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Jellyfin is not just good... but *better* than Plex now?!English5·2 months agoI’ve had both for a while now, but I find that subtitle playback is a bit spotty in Jellyfin. Is that fixed, or have I missed a setting somewhere? The other thing is that my libraries are alphabetical in Jellyfin, so “Anime” comes before “Kaiju”, and I truly can’t stand the idea that Godzilla gets sent to the back of the bus. Is there a way to customize the order of libraries?

I have a friend, got married, had a kid, looked at the world and said, “This has to change.” He bought solar. Bought a Tesla. Started growing food in his back yard. Joined a farm co-op. Did all the right things. Frankly, I admire his willingness to actually be the change he wanted in the world. Then, the owner of the car company turned into a Nazi. Not exactly his fault. Some Tesla drivers need hugs.
I run each of them separately in containers!
I really like running proxmox and then containers for my apps, proxmox being basically Debian already.
I tried a couple of years ago, but it kept crashing after a day or two. Not sure if I set it up wrong or something? Currently running searx-ng, which I quite like.
Yup! PFBlockerNG. I thought the GeoIP thing from Maxmind was paid, since the setup asked for a license key. Nope, free. Just had to register.

But, a friend of mine once said that she got it to work by holding her finger up in front of her face, like a foot away, and then looking past the finger at something farther away. Then, back to the finger. Looking past her finger, she’d see two of the finger, but as soon as she was thinking about the finger, she’d focus again on it and start just seeing the one finger. The trick to the magic eye is basically getting to where you can deliberately focus past the finger and still look at it? I don’t know, I just look and see the image. Once, someone made a fake one that had no image to try to mess with me. There’s also a neat trick where you can immediately see the difference in side by side images by “magic eye-ing” them. The differences kinda flicker or glow, it’s hard to explain.
phanto@lemmy.cato Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is a skill that youhave that you don't get to use very often?9·3 months agoYup, totally could. Loved that game. Would get the Meteor power, then erase the map!
Because of how it was coded, it was really hard to emulate. Haven’t tried in years.
Magic Carpet also had red/blue 3d mode that worked pretty good!
I just set up some geofencing on pfsense, found alot of traffic that I didn’t know was happening. That freaked me out.

phanto@lemmy.cato Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What app is so useful, you can’t believe it’s free?3·3 months agoThere are some games that run anti-cheat that just don’t run. I don’t play any of those at the moment, but other than that, no. The odd thing has quirks, but between Steam and Lutris, I’m good. Not a heavy duty gamer though.
I didn’t know anything about docker when I set up my NC years ago, so I ran it as a snap on bare metal. Man, it’s gotten so much better! It used to really suck. Like, simple file transfers just didn’t work half the time, so I’d be retrying the same thing over and over… A few years ago, I literally migrated it from bare metal to a VM, but kept the exact same install. I have so much crap on it now, I think I’ll never bother switching it out to docker, just because of the inconvenience. I know the snap version can just run using a local hostname, you just have to set it in trusted domains setting. Might be the same in the docker image?
