  • i agree llms can’t do shit right now, what I was talking about was a hypothetical future in which somehow these useless techbros found a way to make them worth a shit. they certainly would be able to make a logical program work than infuse any artistic value into any audio or image.

programs can be written to respond to a need that can be detected and analyzed and solved by a fairly advanced computer. art needs intent, a desire to create art, whether to convey feelings, or to make a statement, or just ask questions. programs can’t want, feel or wonder about things. they can pretend to do so but we all know pretending isn’t highly valued in art.

  • supergiant made the first game I ever played that actually left me conflicted. I’ll try to keep things vague to avoid spoilers:

in the game you play a series of “matches” of what’s essentially magic basketball. at one point I encounter a “team” whose captain hates one of my “players” because of what they’ve done in the past. the problem is that my player is absolutely crushed by their regret for what they’ve done.

this is an rpg without classic rpg mechanics, you can “lose” every “match” and the story will keep going. however at this point I have a spotless record: I’ve “won” every “match” and intend to keep it that way. ok so one of my “players” really hopes the opposing “team” would “win” cause that’s the only way things can be made right but hey that’s drama, right? I can just “win” and live through the consequences.

so I’m playing … terribly. I’m making more mistakes than usual. my “player” keeps pleading to whatever forces may be out there, please let their opponent “win”. and I’m “losing”. I need to “win”. why is this suddenly so hard… am I throwing? fuck, i might not be able to do this.

yeah. first time I “lose”. my “player” is happy. I’m happy. never felt this way in a game. a true choice. not a moral choice Ike most games where you can A. save a town from a bomb or B. set an orphanage on fire… not a mechanical choice where A. you do the bad thing and get red rewards or B. do the good thing and get blue rewards.

no. Just a choice. no clear right or wrong. no special rewards. no new mechanics. it isn’t even presented as a choice. it’s just sportsball with a story, just like each one before. you play to win, right?

    maybe not.

pyre is the peak of video games as art.
