Turning it inward, no one can be fully aware of their own dogmas. It is easy to point them out in others, but impossible to see them in self without the mirror of time and self growth.

    That’s a bit harsh, I think it’s Kevin Smith’s best work.

Clerks is one of the best low budget indy films I’ve ever seen. Dogma is a full theatrical film and 100% the complete package. Clerks has A+ dialogue tho, no argument.

Ok. No disagreement that Dogma had a higher budget. I just think Clerks, even with the lower budget and basically no name cast, is a much better movie. It’s seriously rewatchable. Try rewatching it. Dogma might be a bit slicker in terms of production, but the jokes fall flat and the whole thing feels wandering, like Smith thought he had something to say about Catholicism, the church, modernity, but it ends up aimless and more pointing at the idea of profoundness without actually saying or doing anything profound. Clerks in the other hand has real points to make about consumerism, working life, absurdity of everyday experience, and what something like friendship really means. Smith understands the point he’s trying to make and makes it well. He even front runs the kind of nihilism that’s become dominant in (especially Internet) humor today.

Clerks is easily in my top 100 films of all time, maybe even top 40. And I don’t think it would be improved with higher production budget. Dogma was definitely in my top 100 20 years ago, but these days, prob wouldn’t even crack the top 500. Dogma is pretending to be a smart movie, but us actually kinda dumb. Clerks is a smart movie pretending to be dumb.

Well scientifically the variation in left wing beliefs are significantly less than those of right wing beliefs. So if conservativism is a a dogma then I guess wokism is even more so.

A “Showerthought” is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you’re doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

  • Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
  • When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
  • More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as “capitalism” and “communism”. If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy’s Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
