Sooo, who’s excited for a Singapore sprint next season? 😂
Not the most thrilling race we’ve seen, at least not for the right reasons. I feel like what I’ll remember most is Alonso’s 9-second pit stop and ensuing team radios, as well as Hamilton crawling towards the finish line without brakes on the final lap. These races where the tyres just last forever tend to compound the issues of dirty air and performance convergence that leads to problems overtaking. Still, we really shouldn’t have Softs doing 35 laps around here surely?
There were some good drives sprinkled in there though and even some overtakes, unfortunately the broadcast didn’t show many of them. Bearman’s was probably the best one, but Alonso posted like 7 on track overtakes, which is damn good for being Singapore. It’s almost unbelievable he got back to 8th (7th after the penalty) despite the pit stop blunder. Antonelli had a decent drive too all things considered and managed to recover from his poor start. Hamilton was actually driving really well until the brakes gave out, in particular on that final softs stint where he was flying. Sainz final stint getting into the points through like 4 overtakes in 7 minutes was crazy and completely missed by the broadcast.
Commanding drive from Russel who is still somehow underrated. He has to be the most disrespected driver on the grid right now, just so fast and so consistent. An out and out title fight between him and Max would be box office. I really hope we get the machinery for that next year.
Alonso easily driver of the day, both for his driving and his team radios.
George still has his reputation from diving to the inside and radioing “he just turned into me!” from his rookie season. He is much better now though!
Oh he’s had his moments for sure. He also got clowned on a lot for celebrating the farcical Spa '21 podium, there was him crashing out Bottas and punching him in the head too. I guess he has a lot of negative PR to overcome. I actually think he’s matured a lot though and even rather enjoy his personality these days. He can be quite funny when he wants to.
But in terms of driving skill I think he’s pretty clearly the second best driver on the grid right now. For me it’s Max at SS tier on his own, George at S tier on his own, and then you can start arguing about who is in A tier with the likes of Leclerc and Alonso.
