    24

24 basically invented cinema quality serialized drama in a mainstream over the air medium. It changed television as we know it. And it’s just plain awesome.

Ugh that’s not right at all. There were much better shows that actually fit the description you wrote, like Twin Peaks for example.

Haven’t seen it, I’ll add it to the list! Perhaps I was wrong to say “invented” but instead “popularized” because it seemed to me like the number of new high production quality shows really started getting churned out AFTER 24 became a cultural water-cooler conversation level show that the entire country seemed to be watching. Then suddenly bangers anywhere!

But that could just be confirmation bias on my part.

24 was highly influential, but the story just isn’t ever believable, and the amount of death and torture is absurd. I’m sure it’s a MAGA favourite, but for other people I think it’s mostly interesting as a cultural artifact.

I think it was more popular than you give it credit for. Definitely not just a favorite of MAGA, that’s a very reductive claim.

At the time, sure. But, I think fewer people look back on it fondly and think it should be recommended to people to go find it and watch it today.

That’s totally reasonable. However, for what little anecdotal weight this carries, I showed 24 to my GF who had never heard of it and she absolutely loved it despite the change in times. The tech in the show is dated of course, but it’s like Seinfeld in that sense that sure, these problems could have been resolved differently in 2026, but the show takes place in the era it took place in.

Only when those presidents are “deep state” types. Most of the time he’s killing and torturing all kinds of people, uncovering all these hidden plots. And he has to be the one man army righting all the wrongs because the establishment is either corrupt, or too slow to react, or whatever.

Hard no. Right wing xenophobic bullshit. Sutherland should be ashamed he keeps getting these roles of American Altruism.
