Yesterday I wanted to watch a show with 2 different subtitles on simultaneously. I looked it up and found a 6 years old thread saying it was possible with VLC4.
I found VLC 4 on their website, presented as something like a rolling beta release.
The interface is far superior to VLC3, with things I usually add manually that are already there.
I don’t get why things that have been available for years aren’t pushed to the stable version. Are those still unstable? Abandoned?

4.0 is the next big version that’ll come … Whenever.
VLC has no big corporate sponsor behind them and are notorious for being thorough but slow - i.e. what they released in the past was top notch but it took them six years to go from 2.0 to 3.0.
I didn’t know they were that slow, but that leave this part of the question unanswered : if they have a fonctionnalities that have been working for 6 years, why don’t they put those in VLC3?
Again, maybe it’s just because those functionnalities are not that stable yet, I only tried for 20minutes yesterday…
If I’m understanding it correct, 4.0 had some fundamental differences in terms of code structure, i.e. not everything is downward compatible.
For me 4.0 candidate works just fine to be honest :)

As a side note, if VLC 4 doesn’t work for you, KDE’s Haruna also supports dual subtitles and is actively maintained.
Is VLC still being maintained or developed? I still use it, but only on PC, they already lost (never got?) the mobile market. Even the most basic things, like scaling the UI, is simply not possible. Well fuck me for watching a movie from a distance, how dare I.
