It was originally called the Nintendo Ultra 64:

I think they changed it late in development because they realized there was no “next” name and everyone would have exaggerated any issues with the GameCube being like “Nintendo couldn’t top the Ultra I guess!”

Nintendo when naming their next console:

Yamauchi: “Hey Shigeru, what should we name our next console?”

Miyamoto: “No idea. Anyway, I was thinking about going to the aquarium, you wanna join?”

Yamauchi: “Perfect! We’ll call it the Dolphin!”

      Miyamoto: “…What?”

I mean they could have just stopped after the Ultra 64. The GameCube was alright but there was no point in continuing to invest in Nintendo consoles after that unless you’re just a casual gamer.

I mean the Wii was just an overclocked GameCube with motion controls. The WiiU was just a Wii with a slightly better (yet still outdated) GPU and a worse controller. The Switch 2 is literally just a Switch, again the only difference being that it uses slightly less ancient hardware.

Nintendo gave up completely in innovating after the 90s. Now all they know how to do is cater to the mainstream and sue their most hardcore fans in the name of profit. I’m tired of their Late Stage Capitalism bullshit!

Very weird take, especially after mentioning:

I mean the Wii was just an overclocked GameCube with motion controls.

PlayStation 3 was just a more powerful PlayStation 2. Xbox 360 was just a more powerful Xbox. Then there is Nintendo who, instead of making a more powerful Gamecube, they went with largely the same hardware but with a radically different control scheme.

Isn’t that the definition of trying to innovate?

Also, the Switch format has everything now. I don’t see how anything can innovate further than to radically change what a videogame even is.

Quite the interesting take that they “stopped innovating”. Sure their hardware specs have always been lack luster, but Satoru Iwata always focused on fun over bleeding edge. After the Wii, PlayStation and Microsoft followed suite with the PS4 “wand” and Xbox Kinect. After the Switch released, Sony created the PS Portal, not to mention the Steam Deck and other copy cats. They have literally been the top innovators of the last few generations.

PSP was way before the switch, but otherwise I fully agree.

ETA: but I guess that was copying GBA so. Nevermind.
