Hi everyone, I’m new to Lemmy and looking to get involved. I am curious about what major differences you have experienced here vs Reddit as I am hoping this is a nice alternative.

I’ve personally experienced aggressive overreach and biased moderation on Reddit, and I was wondering if you have experienced a different environment here. If so, are there ways to get the word out about sites like this that might be viable alternatives?

More granularly/specifically, are there any topics that you might have discussed on both platforms and had a different experience? What have you seen here that has been a vast upgrade over Reddit? Thanks for any guidance!

I feel like People are more willing to engage meaningfully here.

My main complaint is that there isn’t that much of a history of answered questions. Where reddit night actually have solved or answered your problem or question andes ago…

But that’s all the more reason to contribute to lemmy.

With search engines getting worse, we should abandon any let-me-google-that-for-you attitude and answer genuine questions right here on the fediverse. Text content federates very well across instances. If an instance dies, other instances preserve those texts.

Yes I agree completely. I was using DuckDuckGo for like 10 years but it’s gotten to the point where it’s genuinely unusable. Even if AI turned off, basically all the results are AI slop blog posts. I was basically impossible to find an answer to any question. I’ve switch to Ecosia and it’s noticeably better, but still, this is a problem every search engine is grappling with right now.

AI slop is like toxic sludge that polluting the online commons. Places like Lemmy are one of the last intact ecosystems that haven’t been destroyed by the sludge.
