Today I was looking for music by Jean Sibelius (just learned about him on a trip to finland a few months ago).
I go to his Spotify page (i know, i know…) and there are literally 50 new releases this year… most of them i assume are the musical equivalent of shovelware… lame compilations like, “classical music for focusing”, “50 best classical songs for summer”, “epic classics!”… album covers with clearly AI slop…
even adding the name of a reputable orchestra doesnt do much…
How do you sort through the trash? What reputable labels should i search along with the composer name?
I pretty much filter out everything before after 2000 just to be sure…
i’m looking to switch to qobuz… not sure if they have better quality control…
(Yes, i still buy physical CDs… my question is about online discovery)

YouTube typically has some concerts by good orchestras near the top of the search results for a composer. You can then search for those recordings elsewhere if you so prefer.
That’s a mistake, many big-name orchestra concerts were recorded before that. Though, as others suggested, you can probably stick to post-1980 since recording tech improved in that time.
Whoops, i meant filter everything AFTER 2000
Well, that doesn’t help either, precisely because people now can record and post stuff to YouTube with better quality than ever.
