My instance, sh.itjust.works, just went through this.
It got started before the turn against AI art and before people could easily recognize the AI art style. I think the admin had a competition, and an AI-generated lemming won.
Having been a recent member, I always thought it was incongruous that I’d bitch about AI on this server while the AI-generated lemming was smiling at me from the homepage sidebar.
I proposed someone draw a new icon, and the admin set up a competition with no ban on AI-generated images. Last I checked, the leader in the race was AI-generated with the majority of human-drawn stuff being explicitly low-effort placeholders. I haven’t had the heart to check into that thread since I voted for the best human-drawn piece of art (which was a true second to the AI icon in my heart), though I see its exploded in comments, so I imagine there is a fierce war raging.
So from this, a few possibilities:
a) People don’t like working for free. You’d think, from all the jibber jabber, that there are all these artists just willing to contribute to community projects, but maybe there there is not.
or
b) People don’t like competitions. I wouldn’t want to work for free for a CHANCE at contributing for a rinky-dink lemmy. I’d rather talk to the sysadmin about what they want, what I think I can offer, and go from there, with the confidence that this concept–which is not mine–will be put into circulation.

c) People don’t like competing with AI. Imagine you spent hours drawing something and you get beat by a prompt generated in a few minutes. I’d be pissed, and I’d want to avoid feeling that way, so I’d avoid competition where AI is allowed.
c2) AI probably has an edge in open competition because it will be blandly familiar to the average uninterested voter.

d) Artists might not want to contribute to server that already has an AI banner and is running a competition without an AI ban because why would they volunteer to support a server that is not supporting them?
A HUGE part people dont talk about is how artists will not draw anything for their community unless they are directly a higher up member of that community. Not that there isnt exceptions, but with the modern commission mindset people see every public art as a transaction. Every art community ive tried to join has always had problems with even art trades, people citing the other persons art isnt “good enough” to be a worthwhile trade. Instead of seeing it as free practice or just doing something nice
Obviously there are exceptions, and if anyone knows of any communitys, matrix/discord servers, etc that is artists trying to improve their art rather then sell it id love to join

Hilarious, but, you know, also low effort and appropriating someone elses art, the same thing we criticize AI art for.
Low effort art still requires more effort than AI “art”, and at least I know someone put some thought into it even if the thought is “hahaha that looks so bad its funny”.

Remixing existing art into new art isnt appropriation, its been part of the cultural institution of art since inception 😅
Its only gross when ai does it because ai is a commercial product designed to take that art, wash it of its human origins and then provide it to people who dont wanna pay artists, and has no artistic vantage point. It doesnt get inspired or have a relationship with anything it gets trained on. If you ask a human to create something like starwars, they will create something based on what speaks to them about starwars and it will be uniquely them. There will be parts or starwars they’re in love with, and parts that dont speak to them, maybe even parts they hate or are exhausted by. If you ask ai you will get an actual literal image of Darth Vader
Personally I find their silly little Photoshop fun and endearing, even if it is low effort 🤷🏻♂️
I wouldn’t really call it appropriating, at least not any more than one could say the same for a song that samples or remixes another. It’s just a derivative work. Like replacing the Mona Lisa with a portrait of some other character.
