Have been feeling this strongly recently. The people with the most signs are the least appealing to support. The food with the most advertisements seems the most likely to be trying to lure people into eating garbage.

Surely there is a word for this? Spam doesn’t feel like the right term when it’s all over the place all the time. It’s like you know it’s wrong because there’s too much money involved trying to convince everyone it’s right.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reactance_(psychology)

In psychology, reactance is an unpleasant motivational reaction to offers, persons, rules, regulations, advice, recommendations, information, and messages that are perceived to threaten or eliminate specific behavioral freedoms. Reactance occurs when an individual feels that an agent is attempting to limit their choice of response or range of alternatives.

Reactance can occur when someone is heavily pressured into accepting a certain view or attitude. Is this how we get moon landing deniers and anti vaxxers?

It includes the “I’m smarter than everyone else” component.

I get this a lot too. It’s the same reason people hate on pop stars.

When you can’t go 10 minutes without hearing a song by or news about Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber, (Sorry, I’m old so those are the freshest examples I can think of) you just can’t help but develop a negative connotation with their name, for really no reason at all.

Sure, you might not like the music, but that’s no reason to actively hate on them. For me, it feels like the more other people love them, the more I HAVE to hate them just to balance out the universe or something, but logically, it makes no sense and I’ve tried to actively stop doing that over the past few years.
