Thinking about Starcraft Dominion, it will likely be released on PS and Xbox too to get to the largest market. I’m wondering if Sony can/will force them to release on PS6 only and not the PS5? PS6 will probably be expensive (ramageddon) and not sell well, and Blizzard will simply want the largest audience. In the past you kinda needed one console generation or the other* but given the whole situation of both gaming and hardware costs, I see uhh console generations and game settings all blending together to put it that way. (*I’m aware many games released on two generations or downscaled for nintendo. It’s often said but I think we’re at a turning point of what we need. How big is the market for 4k? etc.)

    They definitely could if they wanted to, on everything newer than the ps2 i think. They control the digital stores so of course they can easily block certain models. Physical games are digitally signed. Sony or microsoft could invalidate your signing key, even for games you have already released, making every disc unplayable on an unmodded console. Idk if they ever actually do that though.

    Could they? Sure, they hold the keys to the kingdom and can block the release of any title for any reason. And eventually Sony is going to say that PS4 is done, no more PS4 games, and eventually they will also do so for PS5, 6, 7…

    But I don’t think it makes any sense for them to do so prematurely. Cross-gen releases are good for them because the side-by-side comparison helps demonstrate the power of the new hardware. Upgrade paths help keep consumers locked into the ecosystem, even if they buy the last-gen version now they’ll have an incentive to buy better hardware to play it on later. And probably most importantly, it’s just not a good idea to burn bridges with their business partners by being too controlling.

    The fact that we’re still seeing PS4 games released today tells me that long cross-generation transition periods will remain the norm.

    No, unless Sony publish the title, get an exclusive deal with the dev, or they close down the ps store on ps5.

    The market for 4K is very large. The market for games that have some new, hardware-intensive snazziness that requires whatever will be in a PS6 is, I would guess, far smaller. I’m certainly open to others’ market impressions though.

          Funny how Blu Ray content looks great, so we know that is capable of “high quality” at that resolution.

          A perk to UHD over FHD is the addition of HDR/DV. Other perks are ALLM, VRR of 48-120Hz which help your screen “look” better, but that’s not reliant on 2160p, either. You could probably adjust a new game to 1080p and bump settings to max and hardly tell the difference. Unless your C2 is over 75"and you sit <6ft/2m away, not likely.

          I can watch a Blu ray that’s uncompressed and it’ll look* better than a “4K stream” but again there are other factors at play. My point is I think It’s more of a placebo affect that you feel, with needing UHD.

            4k/UHD content on Bu-ray discs is totally a thing, and the PS5 disc edition supports it. Obviously a disc with uncompressed 4k content would look better than a compressed 4k stream.
