I fucking hate instagram. So I have a friend who always sends me instagram posts. I don’t have an insta so I view them in browser but anyways. I have this feeling when watching insta content and it’s just kinda making me agressive. It just feels fake. It feels like there’s always this hard to describe layer over every. Single. Post. This air of cliché normativity. Everything’s unbearably clean, Almost sterile. Everything’s unbearably performative, always feels like it’s hiding something, I cannot quite grasp, but that’s too important to just retouch away, like insta does. Everything has this unbearable rich-american-kids-from-a-bad-teenage-tv-show-vibe. Everything I receive from there is just kinda hard to watch. Like, the content, the message can even be good and well intended takes on politicial subjects. But the way it’s presented always screams “vanity” to me.

So my question:

Is it just me or is everything on insta intentionally or unconsciously vain and superficial?

Am I just massively prejudiced?

Is it just the bubble i get insights to or do you see this phenomenon spanning across different bubbles on the platform? Ppl with insta account s please tell about your experiences. Idk just frustrated about insta ig.

It is what it is, and it’s not surprising seeing the societies and communities that populate it. Interacting with shallow, childish, intellectually limited Lemmings is already a headache, Instagram (unless heavily curated, I guess) would give me an aneurysm.

I remember when Facebook came out and I was in HS, and some of my girl friends got into the annoying habit of posting a selfie with some seemingly profound but completely disconnected quote. I remember thinking how vain and self obsessed they were, but more than that, how boring they were. I’ve already seen your face, you’ve already seen your face, there’s no more information to be extracted here, how is this not boring to you as well? How come you can’t see how extremely pointless and narcissistic this is? And if your life revolves around this, haven’t you made your life pointless as well? This was almost two decades ago, I never thought it would become this bad but here we are. 😭

Much of it is just deeply strange to me. I haven’t had the gradual exposure to normalize what kind of content people put up so when I do stumble upon it I just get this uncanny feeling almost like the other people are trying to gaslight me into thinking this is normal.

It is probably the default experience and somewhat shaped by the links your friends are sending you. The problem is that fixing it requires you to participate in the product.

if I’m sent any links to Facebook, instagram, tiktok or whatever other garbage criminal site designed for sheep, I flat out say I won’t click it and to stop sending them.

save the video and send the video if they truly think it’s worth it, otherwise the link is never getting clicked.

I have the same mentality and approach as well, and have legitimately lost friends because of this.

One of the excuses as to why they “don’t have the time” to keep in contact is apparently because I’m “impossible to contact with no Facebook or Insta or Snapchat”, even though they all had my phone number and even my primary personal email, and a Signal account.

Yes, yes it is. Its litterly the point of the platform in my opinion. Do anything to make you look better then your viewer so you can get that 2¢ commission per sale when you get a sponsored video.

If I have to click a link, I copy it and delete everything after the ? And the ? itself so it’s not traceable who shares it, or from what platform, etc. It’ll be played in a locked down browser that clears cache and cookies on close so there’s no trace left. I don’t want anything to do with that shit lol.

is everything on insta everything on insta intentionally vain and superficial?

Yes. Even if you only follow your friends the stuff pushed to you in the “suggested for you” posts in your feed are always going to be from creators that have a huge volume of subscribers. They get this large number of subscribers by being highly relatable (cliché) or highly aesthetic (superficial). The presentation is 100% curated and usually manged by several people if not a company. In fact there are hundreds if not thousands of companies who’s only purpose is to manage Instagram for other people.

If you are looking for something raw, real and humanlike, you will not find it on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok.
