Hold onto the side of the flat with the knuckle cartilage and twist the small bone and pull it out, now you can mouth the whole flat and pull the meat from a single bone or if you twist and pull the bigger bone out you can eat the thing whole except the cartilage.

It is still a lot of work vs reward but the crispness of the skin and sauce holding ability make them worthwhile.

Every time the family orders out trays of wings, I can’t help myself from commenting “what a lovely tray of death!”, pointing out that it cost one chicken for every four “wings” (two drummets and two flats) . It doesn’t hurt to remind ourselves where food comes from and to be appreciative and grateful for their sustenance.

There’s always leftovers too, which I hate going to waste. Very easy to incorporate into other foods (fried rice, soup, salads, etc).

Meat processing plants aren’t wasting the chickens.

For every 4 “wings” there are two breast and two thighs going into their own separate packs, the rest of the carcass gets boiled, the cooked meat on the carcass goes to shredded cooked chicken, the broth from the cooking process goes to be sold or dried into Bouillon cubes. The bones likely go to a secondary market.

I never said anything about wasting other parts of chickens. I was referring to leftover wings going uneaten and going to waste. Incorporating the chicken meat from the wings into other dishes I’m quite good at.

200 million chicken get slaughtered each day, they lived a life of horror veyond comprehension. If they are lucky they are the 50% that lands in the meat grinder after birth. And people here are worried that it might be unhealthy or that they need their protein.

I raise chickens to eat. They don’t need to be raised in a torture chamber so they can be feed, bred or slaughtered on an assembly line. You only need that if need that so people can eat chicken for cheaper then veggies and for every meal.

You could also have chickens just live as part of an ecosystem and never kill them yourself. They actually don’t need to be tortured to exist

Yes of course! Many farmers actually love their animals and take good care of them. And yes, some people have chicken, gooses, or some other farm animals as pet. For some, such as donkeys, they are rised despite a lost of material interest ; mostly to maintain exsitant some animals who served us since forgotten times.

I don’t understand how some people can be vegan without be heartless. I can understand vegetalian, but I think keeping alife a wide diversity of farms animals is a duty for humanity.

Well, without rising farm animals, many of them would not survive. We could let more wild spaces for them, but even so we would still have to accept some extinctions. And I don’t think we would really let them enough space for their needs. So I see veganism as an acceptation of this extinctions. As the vegan contributor said earlier, they see animals who don’t live or are killed very early as the luckiest.

I agree that we do not anymore have an absolute need to keep rising animals. Thanks to our technological progress, due for a significant part to our exploitation of animals. But so we would now fire them and let them die? This sound heartless to me.

    Why not?

It’s a protein, so it really just depends on what your eating with them. As long as you’re getting balanced nutrition, there’s no reason Chicken Wings can’t be the protein choice every day.

Compared to lots of other foods, chicken wings aren’t especially unhealthy, I think? They aren’t normally deep fried, chicken is a healthier meat than beef or pork, not sure there are good health reasons not to eat them every day? Of course it gets boring after a while.

“Healthy” in regards to foods is problematic at best. It all depends on the rest of your diet, your needs, and especially your dosage (portions and portion size).

Could a small amount of chicken wings be a great supplement? Sure, it has all sorts of useful micro and macro nutrients, if that’s what you need. Could you have a bunch without any impact to your health? Possibly, if you’re doing keto. Would your health improve if you cut them out? Also a maybe, if it doesn’t work with the rest of your lifestyle and genetics.

Example: Chicken is high in omega-6. This is bad for some people, but only some. And I bet you hadn’t considered it as a factor in whether it’s healthy.

Im sorry to say, chicken wings could quite possibly be the worst thing for you. Its the absolute fattest part of the chicken. Its really all fat. Then they are covered in sugary sauce or fatty sauce. They aren’t chicken breast, they’re the dark meat covered in skin. The dipped in delicious butter/oil rich buffalo sauce. The best things ever…

      • protein
      • crispy crunchy
      • flavourful (whether from being nicely cooked or from all the optional extra stuff)
      • takes some time to eat, slowing me down (so I don’t overeat as easily, and can sit down and actually watch the game recap without finishing 20% of the way through)

also, chicken wings come in sizes from “this looks like it was a baby” to “there is no way this chicken was healthy before slaughter”

I like a good midsize crispy wing with spices and just a dab of sauce.

For king crab, yes. For snow crab, you can open the leg with the right technique. Snap it in the middle and you can remove one half of the shell then pull the meat out of the other half.

Funny you mention that. I absolutely went through a DIY Soylent phase, but I was playing around with the recipe(s) via nutrition tracker apps, aiming to hit targets via “real” foods, not supplements, and aiming for “different” recipes. It’s actually not as difficult as you might expect, and I don’t even mind eating the same meal for a good chunk of my meals, but it just… didn’t… work… Maybe it’s the lack of chewing?

I was still “hungry”. I was definitely getting calories, macros, etc., but I think it being in liquid form, no chewing, meant that some of the biological processes weren’t getting the expected feedback.

Well the appeal basically boils down to they’re fucking delicious; particularly when compared to other chicken parts seasoned in the same way.

Your focus on the meat of it all is probably your downfall. Fat brings the flavor and chicken skin is packed with it. Wings, far and away have the best skin to meat ratio of all the chicken parts.

That’s on the wings you choose.

If you have a Publix within range, for example, their “naked wings” are quite tasty. While they do season them lightly with salt and some sort of spice, they’re basically just fried wings, but very tasty.
