I’m here from Reddit. They banned me for absolutely no reason. That’s frustrating. How works Lemmy ?
Landlords, billionaires, AI, Reddit = Bad
Beans, Linux = good
Marxist-Leninists = it’s complicated
It’s not that complicated, Half of the population are Marxist Leninist, and the other half thinks MLs are subhuman and being shot to death is a fate too kind.
Half the population claims to be MLs, are quarantined by the other half of Lemmy, and the ones who talk the most sure do love simping for the least ML states in existence just because they grow from the corpse of the Soviets.
Lmao all it took was one person mentioning MLs and the flame wars kick off. I’m sorry I even commented in the first place.
It’s actually hilarious that your alt would pretend to be a victim with that comment.
I don’t have an alt and I’m not sure what you’re talking about?
Something I haven’t seen people talk about is the nature of the fediverse in terms of the philosophy of separate instances.
There are a lot of “general” instances that are kind of like mini-reddits. Lots of users sign up from all over, communities for a wide variety of interests. But there are also instances with a specific focus.
For example, I’m a member of midwest.social so when I look at the “local” feed, I only get communities relating to the US midwest. But of course, I can still subscribe and interact with other communities on federated insances.
Think of it like email. You can sign up for the big general purpose emails (google, outlook, icloud, etc). But you might want something different, perhaps privacy focused like Proton or Tuta. Or you can have an “instance” for your work where everyone gets an @company.com email. Or maybe you just want to spin up your own email with a vanity domain.
No matter which email server you use, you can still communicate with people on separate servers.
You don’t have to stick with the first account you create. In fact, I’d recommend that you try a few instances before you settle on one.
Beyond separate instances, there are also alternatives to Lemmy that are very similar but do some things differently. Mbin, Kbin, and Piefed are examples. And again, thanks to federation standards and everything being built to be compatible, you can subscribe to a Lemmy community from Mbin and vice versa.
You should know that you are awesome
You’re gonna need this.

… when the time comes, you’ll know what to do.
Beans are still the GOAT when sorting by top all time for my sub’s, whichever ones they are

Get ready for meme trends that confuse the hell out of you almost every week.
Hey at least they went with beans and not the “no poo for a month” one
There’s about 20 monumental assholes here that are responsible for almost all of the squabbling and drama.
Use the BLOCK function liberally, every time you find someone who’s just a complete asshat, block them.
Eventually you’ll catch the big fish and life will get easier around here and you won’t have these morons to deal with.
“Post before you leave” is the rule of one of the most active communities on here, but it is a good rule in general
There is no karma here. Don’t worry too much about being downvoted every now and then.
Also, I like sorting by scaled. It’s like sorting by hot, except it pushes smaller, niche communities up. Which is great if you don’t want your feed to just be news articles.
I love that points don’t matter. It means that I can say controversial shit like: Janeway did nothing wrong. That’s right I went there she didn’t murder tuvix.
Janeway was right!
Though that Tuvix uniform was hot, you have to admit.
I recommend looking at everything in ‘settings’. There are some cool things you can do, such as limiting your home page solely to communities you’re subscribed to.
Also, blocking works differently here. People you block will still see your posts, you just won’t see their replies. (Which I find to be kinda fun, personally.)
- Think about things you like.
- Look for community about said thing
- If it exists, GREAT! contribute content And have fun!
3-A. If it DOESN’T exist, make it. THEN contribute & have fun!
- Become a linux user.
4 isn’t a rule, but an eventuality.
Here you need to complain about AI and promote Linux. That’s a good start I guess?
Hey now, I’m not on Lemmy because I love Linux and despise the AI hype cycle.
I mean…I do love Linux…and I do despise the AI hype cycle…
But that’s not why I’m on Lemmy.
I mean, not the only reasons.
Change post type to All and sort by Active. Start blocking communities that you don’t want to see and subscribing to communities that interest you.
If you are like me and you want to see where everyone is talking, change your sort to New Comments instead of Active.
Done !
I like “all” and “top” 1 hour or 6 hours, which is a better way to get to interesting content that changes over the course of the day
Top 6h is great because it’s long enough for a scroll but eventually it stops and you can get on with your day.
Yup, I changed that !
Active seems the least active though. It’s the most active comments in threads, so it will seem stale for awhile. I suggest, All, subscribed and local and switching to hot, scaled and top 6 hours. Play around with them until you find your sweet spot.
Hot seems to be a lot more current active for me. Subscribed is my chill feed and All is a barrage of American news and memes that I consume for short bursts at a time.
OK, I appreciate the tips !
how long can you go without pooping?

If you aren’t a bot change your tag or people are going to block you
Oh, I found it ! I’ve clicked on it by mistake lol.
I bet you read the checkbox text as “I’m not a bot” and ticked it :D
Done !
You’re still Tagged as a bot for me.
And now ?
Still a bot
WHYYYYY
I’m going to show you some pictures, and I need you to tell me which ones have bikes in them.
Took a look at your profile and it’s still tagged as a
botto me. However, when I checked your profile from the default lemmy.world frontend, it is not.I am guessing it’s just taking a while to propagate and some instances or frontends are using cached data.
I guess it’s yet another thing you’d have to get used to here: due to how decentralized things are here, some things take a while to propagate.
Maybe you’re a bot? Lol
I hope you get it figured out
I’ve never heard of this
How do you do this? I’m on Voyager.
I also have not found it.
Somewhere on your user settings.
Honestly, it’s pretty left wing and there can be duplicates of communities. There’s far less content than on Reddit but I find that better because I lost weeks of my life doom scrolling on Reddit. I hit a point on here where I just have to wait for more stuff to appear. One good thing about that is you can comment on something and actually be heard. Not like on Reddit where all but the most niche communities have 200+ comments on each post.
Also, and this is a big one, you have to be running Linux.
Whhhhhyyyy Linux ? It works with Edge on Windows 11. But I think you’re right. It seems a far less anxious than Reddit, too.
It works with Edge on Windows 11

Lmao, I also use Linux, but for my personal server. I’ve pro softwares who only works with Win. Wine don’t support them.
Acceptable excuse. I am all in with Linux except that one program that uses .net and I can not get wine to work.
So the laptop with win11 comes out every month or so. After the 3-4 hours of updates and 2-3 reboots, it’s up and running for the 30minute task I have.
Have you tried to disable optional Updates ?
You don’t have to use Linux… But, the side effects of using Lemmy might include switching to Linux and self hosting.
😎 I use Linux bro. Not on this computer, but I use Linux lol.
You’ll fit in just fine
#ME2
I mean, I didn’t when I joined Lemmy, but I do now.
I don’t think Lemmy was the deciding factor, Microsoft almost forced me by checking how much they can enshitificate win11 before users start exploding.
For me, Win11 just works (⊙o⊙) I assume it depends for your softwares, reinstalls, etc.
That’s perfectly valid. If Windows suits your needs and priorities, use it. I use Windows on my work laptop because Linux would be a nightmare with all the tools and apps we use. But personal laptop? Linux all the way.
In case you’re serious, Lemmy is the hot, exciting, punk, rebel version of reddit and Linux is the hot, exciting, punk, rebel version of using your computer. The motivation for using either are quite similar.
In fact, I’m using the both systems. (I used more or less ALL LINUX EVER lol). But I’m here just because Reddit is now a full porn / horny place, without any soul. Too many ads too.
Tbh, there are some horny people here too, Miisha for example, but they have soul. Soulful horniness.
It’s okay if you’re not linux, but there are a lot of those users here. You’ll hear a lot about it, lol.
It is not an anger factory here either for the most part. You’re coming around election time, so there is a bit of it. You might go through a bit of withdrawal.
You don’t have to run Linux. Don’t listen to this nonsense. There’s general lack of nuance here and It’s very hive like. So you’ll find a very strict “with -us-or-against-us” mentality in almost every corner of this place.
It’s not strictly necessary to run Linux, there’s also the BSDs, PonyOS, 9front, etc.
Or windows, or Safari, or Google…. Or whenever someone choses to use.
I run Linux on a another computer. I think Windows AND Linux are cools
I’m on iOS using Safari and it runs perfectly fine. Don’t listen to the kids.
Also, the more difficult your Linux distribution is to use, the more respect you’ll receive.
E.g. Ubuntu < NixOS < LFS
Today I finished setting up local searxng on NixOS. I made it so that when the searxng module is enabled the searxng will get added to firefox as custom and default search engine which is pretty neat.
E: Otherwise if the module is disabled then ddg is used as a fallback.
where does hannah montana linux rank?
or gilbert gottfried?

Right after TempleOS.
It’s just like Reddit. Except non-fascist. And karma doesn’t mean anything. In other words, it’s much better!
there’s also beans
True. Lots, and lots of beans. We don’t understand it either; just roll with it. 😎
Sometimes Jeans, which may appeal to OP
Beans in Jeans, you say?!
It’s me !
Yeahhh lol
?
There are many inside jokes for you to catch up on. Some are one-off things, others are enduring.
A few recurring themes include beans, jeans, moths, anything startrek, and corn. Time will tell if powdered milk makes a comeback.
Welcome to the fediverse!
In-joke from the very early days of the platform
But still plenty of authoritarians who will tell you fascists are a better option than the better options.
Ah ok, thank you !
I don’t think Reddit is politic. In my case, my feed was fill with horny posts and ads. Try to filter them was just futile.
You can block posts marked as NSFW in your settings. Well moderated instances require their users to properly tag their NSFW content.
Some instances have rules against posting NSFW altogether or place limits on what can be posted.
You’ll see a lot of horny posts here too. Block the communities as they appear and it’ll calm down.
