Yes I am talking about lemmy.ml.
These little pissants keep coming out of the woodwork with their ridiculous political extremism and while I can block them each and all individually it’s like playing whack-a-mole.
:)
I use Lammy Connect for my client. I can block on user and instance. For a blocked instance, user comments from that instance are collapsed be default. This is useful since you can still see the context of a thread without getting exposed to any potential weirdness while still being able to see normal conversations. (There may be ways to fully block the comment, but I am too lazy to dig into the settings.)

piefed allows for blocking of entire instances. Blocking the tankie instances was the first thing i did.
Nope. Easiest solution would be to move your account to an instance that doesn’t federate with lemmy.ml in the first place.
I wish there was a way to auto block anyone who uses certain phrases. Some of the shit stains proudly self identify themselves with their language and no matter how many times I try to consider maybe this person is different, they never are.
Voyager has several block/filter options, including users, instances, keywords, and websites.
Yeah, a bunch of clients have instance blocks. Jerboa does.
use piefed
Honestly I see way more whining about .ml users than I’ve ever seen them actually being a problem.
You can do it with the connect app
They’re here. Nice bait OP. 😹

I’m honestly not trying to bait.
Sounds like you had a frustrating experience. Sorry about that.
Calling out stupid liberal takes is political extremism sure. I don’t see a lot of extremists on lemmy.ml just a lot of salient takes that liberals don’t like to have to reckon with.
Obviously you dont see it, you’re one of them.
Again with this tired old shit.
No matter how many times you pretend your “enemies” like bad things as long as Democrats do them, or how many derisive labels you hurl at us, or anything else you do to make yourself feel better, none of it will ever be seen as constructive criticism, because it very clearly is nothing remotely akin to that. We both know your intent is never to have anyone reckon with anything. Your intent is to spray hatred in an attempt to feel righteous. Too bad you’ll never actually feel good about yourself. Shoulda blocked you a LONG time ago but that’s getting rectified in a moment.
Now let’s be fair. I’ve seen a lot of hateful comments, often openly advocating for ending someone’s life just for being rich assholes and the like. If that isn’t extreme, then what is? It seems like when things become ideological, shit heats up instantly and people lose their ability to keep their emotions in check.
You are just as willing to kill to maintain liberal democracy as we are to instate communism.
THERE were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.
No, I would not kill for any such reason. If the other primates decide to smash their heads in over petty politics, go enjoy yourselves. I’m going to leave this thread now as I’m tired of all this ideological drama.
We’re not all the same, you know. There’s also a lot of decent people over here.
There are decent people in Israel as well. Let’s see how many downvotes I get for saying this.
Yeah, I know? I don’t quite get your point.
Did you steal my username, be honest
3 day old account
defending .ml
Absolutely no way
And so… would you want to block all israeli people? That’d be the analagous situation. What is it you’re trying to say?
If it’s just what you want on your own app that’s fine, of course - to each their own.
You know that adage about how a bar turns into a Nazi bar? (Don’t get hung up on the word ‘Nazi’. The type of asshole is irrelevant to my point.) The decent ones are just the wedge.
The fedi-verse is big enough for me without assholes and asshole apologists.
I’m afraid assholes (of any kind of extreme) are everywhere. I block them, too. Doesn’t mean I can’t keep staying in that bar.
You’ve missed the point, I’m afraid. The bar is someone’s individual feed, and the bartender is their blocklist (or their server’s federation list) deciding who gets to stay and who is thrown out on their ear.
Alright, then. I don’t like the idea of throwing out anyone just because they share the same instance. But it’s everyone’s own decision.
I don’t care at all about instances, I even mostly disabled it showing. If someone sucks, bye bye. If they’re decent, they’re welcome. Sure, it’s more work, but I hate to put people in groups.
The point of the nazi bar is that decent people do leave the nazi bar, if it allows nazis.
Assholes are everywhere, and if an instance specifically tolerates assholes that’s not great either (which is why a lot of us are against instances with open signups). IMO the .ml instance specifically caters to a specific kind of asshole, while also being a default instance. My first account was on .ml, but I left when I learned more about it.
Here is some good food for thought about permissive instances: https://lgbtqia.space/@alice/115499829288185416
Why reactive moderation isn’t going to cut it, aka, “The Sucker-punch Problem”.
Imagine you invite your friend—let’s call him Mark—to a club with you. It’s open-door, which is cool, because you like when a lot of folx show up. Sure, it might get a little rowdy, but they have a bouncer, and you’ve never seen things getting out of hand.
So, you’re busy dancing when a new guy walks in wearing a “I Hate Mark” shirt and promptly sucker-punches Mark. You didn’t see it happen, but Mark is upset and tells the bouncer, who kicks the guy out.
A few minutes later, the same guy walks back in and sucker-punches Mark again. Same result. Some people in the club say they’ll tell the bouncer if they see him come in again.
Mark wants to leave, but you tell him it’s not that bad—after all, you’ve never been punched, and you didn’t see Mark get punched, so maybe he’s just being sensitive.
A different guy walks in wearing a “I Plan On Punching Mark” shirt. No one tells the bouncer, because they’ve never seen *this* guy punch Mark.
He sucker-punches Mark. At this point, Mark is pissed and yelling about being punched.
The club members talk about putting up a “No Punching Mark” sign, but the owner is worried it’ll hurt his club’s growth.
Another Mark in the club proposes they turn away anyone wearing an anti-Mark shirt or espousing anti-Mark rhetoric at the door, but this gets shot down for the same reason as the sign idea—then someone sucker-punches him.
By the end of the night, your friend Mark is beat to fuck and says he’ll never come to this club again. In fact, he’s going to tell anyone named Mark to stay clear of this place.
The next time you go to the club, half the folx there are wearing “I Kill Marks” shirts, but there aren’t any Marks there, so it doesn’t come up.
I’ve been sucker-punched every day, for the last three days in a row by some of the most vile hate-speech and imagery. The accounts are using open registration servers and signing up with variations on the username “heilhitler1488”. I fully expect it’ll continue as long as we have open registration servers.
And no, username pattern blocking alone won’t fix this, it’ll help a little, but mostly it’ll just make them wear a different shirt while they sucker-punch us.
#OpenRegistrationHurts
The beauty of federalisation is that you can have both. But we should be honest - maintaining a community with closed registration processes takes effort, so it’s always going to be smaller than open registration. For people unlikely to get punched, most are going to end up in the soup of generally-federated instances, rather than in a more closed-off but safer network.
And since we’re not really talking about people called Mark getting punched, but trans people being exposed to transphobia and things like that, there’s also an important distinction that is worth remembering: being exposed to hateful statements is horrible, but not as horrible as being punched. So some trans people do end up staying on lemmy.world and that’s also OK.
But the percentage of those who are not so great there is significantly higher than on any popular instance that I know. Yes, blocking everyone is not ideal, but it’s a valid low effort way of improving your experience.
There’s also a lot of decent people over here.
Exactly, I’m also just hanging around the nazi bar for the free buffet!
