Today marks the start of my first week of unemployment after quitting. My boss and I were into each other, but he refused to pursue anything with me while I worked there because it would’ve been unethical. So I quit.
Worth it.
I wanted out of Ohio because they were passing bigoted laws, so I quit my job and moved out west
Things went downhill for a long time.
I did refrigeration at a factory. I found out shortly after I was hired that the factory used to belong to another company, and was phasing out old company’s policies. Things got worse, but it wasn’t too terrible. I was paid well, worked decent hours, had a lot of freedom. But one of the leads of our team started developing a drug habit. Got addicted to painkillers, and when those started running out, he got addicted to alcohol. Started showing up to work drunk.
One time, on a weekend when he wasn’t even scheduled to work, he decided to drive a forklift through the boiler room. He hit a steam pipe, which started leaking. He also hit the deaerator tank and an air compressor. The damage was pretty bad. He was told to get a drug test by the manager on duty that weekend, so he called his own manager to avoid that. For some reason, on Monday, the on duty manager got fired and not the drunk guy who caused all the damage. I reported this all to HR, but they did nothing about it.
Years later. Same guy kept causing incidents (usually on weekends when he wasn’t scheduled to work; I suspect he was digging through scrap bins to pay for his drug habit, which were kept in the boiler room) and his manager kept protecting him. Guy did nothing useful, so I have no idea why the manager kept protecting him (maybe sharing money from the scrap?). I figured it was time to go if these two were able to keep fucking things up. We’d eventually have an incident where people died, and I didn’t want to be there for it.
Couple years after I quit, the drug addict OD’d, and the manager was forced into early retirement, so I guess the problem is resolved. Not that I’d ever go back.
Left my job 6 months ago because I was burnt out. I went from being a software developer in a team of 4 to being the only developer at the company. Then the IT support guy left so I was also doing IT support for 30 retail stores along with my regular job. I didn’t have a review or pay rise in the 4 years I was with the company. There was some other stuff around data privacy which was the final straw for me so I left. Still unemployed.
Obviously the workload they were putting on you was way beyond a rational amount for one person. If you’re willing to talk about it, can I ask if you considered simply refusing to do more than “one person’s” amount of work and asked them to prioritize all your tasks so you could work on the things they deemed most important? Obviously this could lead to you being fired, but if you were already set to quit, the outcome would have been the same (except perhaps you’d be eligible for unemployment insurance).
They asked me to develop and install a very invasive spyware on computers (both personal and company’s) of all employees.
Personal is crazy
I was burnt out and the company was in the process of merging with two other companies. The leadership shifted to a bunch of people who wanted to be in charge but didn’t have a plan on doing what their targets were. All changes were sudden and generally led to conditions worse than they were before.
So I left.
Because the season is over. Yeah, gonna miss the view from my office.
That’s alright, I’ll be back next year.
Last time I quit was a restaurant job. Most of my shifts were “on call”, so I didn’t actually know until early afternoon whether I’d be working that day. Tips were meh, there was a required tip out, and credit card tips were held until pay day. The final straw was when management sent out an email one day to all staff reminding us that calling out due to being hung over wasn’t acceptable. I gave my notice and they didn’t schedule me again until my final day.
Most of my shifts were “on call”, so I didn’t actually know until early afternoon whether I’d be working that day.
That’s just evil.
It’s ironic, in a way. I was in an abusive work environment, with abusive clients, and had to dream up ways to efficiently do the job of three people. It was awful and I was there for over a decade trying to get out, but the methods I invented to make my hellish job easier helped me get hired where I am now.
Two weeks before I left I’m walking into work and I get the call that I’ve been hired to the job I have now, which has a much better culture and reasonable work load. I was so happy I skipped to work Dick Van Dyke-style and immediately put in my two weeks.
Had a replacement plan done in two days because I already had my tasks inventoried, since I had to keep very close track of my productivity to protect myself from HR and management. I had some tenure and was making more than other employees, and therefore a consistent target for layoffs.
Spent the last week and a half getting paid to do jack shit, though my asshole team did make me take my turn with the on-call pager, even though it made no fucking sense other than spite.
Overall, t’was glorious.
The boss was incompetent and well on the way to driving the company to bankruptcy or worse. I was self-employed.
Crunch got steadily worse and worse, until I just couldn’t take it anymore.
I only literally quit once, it was because the men in the same position were paid more than me, but I got the more difficult/busy shifts. Basically I was paid less for doing more, because I was a woman.
The other times I left jobs were layoff (company bought out by another) maternity, and once fired as I was shit at that job, it was also a shit job for me, very bad fit so that’s ok.
Toxic boss who’s entire personality was his job. He was very smart, and not a complete monster, but it was quite sad that he had no life outside of work and expected us to be the same.
Because I was on a student contract, and got kicked out of college.
My manager had a meeting with all of us and basically said we’re all gonna be fired.
Next week they retracted everything they said and said they misunderstood.
The week after that they left the company.
My employer(s) got sent to jail. They stole 401k money among other things. It was on the news!
I didnt quit persay but I had a job lined up about a week before it all happened.
My ex-employer didn’t “steal” 401k money, but they did violate plan rules and engineer an illegal allotment that put 60% of the plan in a single company that the CEO and his brother had an interest in.
I ended up getting $5,000 as part of the settlement when got their asses sued to hell for it. They’re still millionaires so it doesn’t matter, but that 5k will be tens or hundreds of thousands by the time I retire, most likely, and it was satisfying to take a chunk out of them.
How long did it take to get the money? It took us a little over a year to get anything out of the settlement and I heard that was a fast track court case because both ceos admitted to everything in our case.
I got the notice about the class action, IIRC, about nine months before the settlement went out. I’m not sure how long the actual court case too as I didn’t get a notice until a settlement was reached.
