It would be nice to see the collapse discussed in real-time, but also have something to reference in the future as significant turning points.

I’m directly affected by Trump, but I think the decline started decades ago. We’re just at the hoverbike stage now.

404 edit: ok if you include the /c/ only lemmy instances can follow it

Relative links are a minefield because sometimes ! works and sometimes it federates a direct link that is worthless

!keeptrack@lemmy.world should work on any fediverse platform.

Connect (Android app), interprets the first link as a(n inexistent) user profile; alternate one works perfectly.

Thanks, subbed! This is focused on Trump though, and I don’t think the decline started with or ends with his presence.

I think history books are meant to be the reference for later. And I think it’s two separate jobs to report something that’s currently happening. And analyzing it with hindsight and judging the impact and importance of the events. That’s kind of impossible while we don’t know the consequences yet.

Oh, just wait a little bit longer. Executive orders requiring the modification of recorded history is not far away.

The world may be mocking the Gulf of America, but if idiot boy makes it official, there’s a whole country that’ll be using that name.

orders requiring the modification of recorded history is not far away.

That has already happened in some red states.

We’ll have to see about that. Changing history records and telling your story instead of the truth is as old as humanity. But with recent technological advances, we have misinformation on the rise. And we’ll have to see whether we can tell apart a generated video from a recording of a historical event in 10 years time… I certainly hope so. And that kind of technology is going to make progess as well. Maybe facts are just a thing of the past… That kind of sides with OP though… I mean it’ll be impossible to tell apart a record of events from fakes… But if you took them themselves and verified things while they’re still happening, that could prove to be helpful.

Sorry, I’m guilty of this. For me, my more whimsical threads and comments are a healthy distraction from our new American autocratic hellscape. Some escapism is good for mental health. Sometimes I slip and mention of American politics because that’s what’s causing me stress, and that’s a mistake. I shouldn’t bring up politics so much.

Modern, polite societies - “Never bring up politics or religion in conversation, as you will never, ever change someone’s mind about those two subjects, and it’s both ignorant and arrogant to think you can”

Americans - “Hold my high fructose corn syrup!”

We discuss these things. But don’t use Mbin/Lemmy/Piefed to actually organize your local resistance efforts. It’s too public. That’s for encrypted platforms like Signal.

Just a heads-up: Everything you post on Lemmy is public, for the entire world to see, including your ip address and username.
So make sure you use a VPN in a friendly foreign country, do not re-use your username anywhere else, and do not post any info about yourself using the same account or IP address. Even so, those guidelines only protect against superficial surveillance.

For actually organizing resistance, a platform that offers privacy and encryption would be better suited.

Trump is threatening shutting down FEMA just to fuck with California. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few states start to talk about what the point of the union is.

It’s more subtle than that though. The Federal government can only call out the army in very targeted ways, and states already only obey federal laws that come with funding.

The official union won’t disolve easily, but many of the practical benefits of the union may erode quickly.

The supreme court probably won’t stop being the highest in the land, but executive orders and federal laws not backed by military action could quickly lose their current influence.
