Just discovered a much easier way to grind my coffee in the morning and felt dumb because it was so obvious, figure there’s some good stories out there about this type of thing out there

For a long time, I thought, I had a pretty good technique for cutting bell peppers by cutting near the indents, so I could easily remove the white strips.
Then decided one day to look up how chefs do it. And yeah, my technique was garbage in comparison. 😅

The technique that I now use, is to cut off the stem, so you can place it upside down onto the cutting board. And then slice downwards between two indents, so that you take out a whole wall.
Ideally, you just need three slices to take out the three walls and then you’re left with the stem, the seeds and the white strips, all still connected for ease of disposal.

But even if you’ve got an ugly bell pepper or not the skills to do it in three cuts, it’s fine. After taking out that first wall, you can continue going around in a circle, just make sure to cut between the white strip and the wall, so that gets removed right away.

It’s just easily twice as fast as what I was doing before, and I’m much less likely to get seeds everywhere as well.

Not really applicable to most grinders so I left it out. My grinder is a manual one with three pieces, the top which has the grinder, the bottom jar it screws on to, along with a cap to screw on to the jar to preserve ground coffee when not in use. I store it with the cap on and the top separate. You load the beans into the top part, but the top doesn’t have a flat bottom so I would try and balance it and frequently spill the beans when loading it instead of just taking the cap off and screwing it on to the jar and then loading the beans…

If flossing is hard because it’s difficult to get the floss between your teeth, then you need braces.

Ever since I got braces, for one, I smile with my whole mouth now, and for two, flossing is a quick 30 second in and out procedure that helps keep my breath smelling better.

If you have a detachable faucet, you can stretch it over to fill your coffee machine directly.

    2 things.

    1. Brushing my teeth in the shower
    2. Sitting on the toilet backwards so I can use the tank as a table.

In most of the places I’ve lived, I’ve had hot water fixtures that gradually started dripping again no matter how tightly I turned them off—I figured the problem was that the valves were weakened from being overtightened, and I was faced with the tradeoff of continuing to overtighten them and gradually make the problem worse, or undertighten them and deal with the drip.

But recently I realized the real issue was that the valves were shrinking after they cooled off, causing the seal to loosen. So I changed my routine: after using the hot water, I’ll shut the water off lightly, then wait 30 minutes for the valve to cool and tighten it again.

The dishwasher should be run when it’s convenient, not when it’s full.

I run the dishwasher so it’s finished at least an hour before I start dinner. So when I start cooking, 1. all the dishes are clean, and 2. the dishwasher is empty. This will save you so much effort if you can just learn to run the thing half full once in a while.

I used to feel that the dishwasher should be full for efficiency, environmental reasons, water bill, and such. Then, I added a water flow meter to my Home Assistant setup.

A full dishwasher cycle uses 4 gallons of water.

      Four. Gallons.

Yeah, run that thing when you need it.

I run mine before going to bed, so I’m not waiting on the heated drying to finish and I have fresh plates and untensils in the morning.

This plus hand washing cooking stuff while cooking (when possible) make cleaning up after meals a lot less dreadful. Just having mixing bowels and other prep stuff out of the way makes it easier to wash wooden spoons and large items like mixing bowls that doesn’t go in the dishwasher reasonable after eating.

Pausing for 5 seconds before opening the fridge to plan what I need to get saves time and electricity by only having to open the fridge door once.

I suffered from back pain. Until one doc recommended one of those 20$ abs rollers. Like 20 reps take 3 minutes? Boom. No more back pain. Actually had to quit a more physical job because of this.

Exercising regularly and eating healthy and then experiencing the benefits of easier sleep and feeling happier is so frustrating.

The worst feeling came with the realisation that all those annoying gym junkie “you are what you eat”, “eat less, move more” douchebags are correct about everything. Now I’m responsible for my actions, goddammit.

The other week I didn’t get the fries with my normal chicken burger from the fast food place and didn’t get that awful heavy feeling in my stomach afterwards. Made me so angry.

Saying no instead of trying to fix everyone’s problems. I’m bit handy at fixing a lot of things and I’m happy to teach people how to fix stuff but sadly most of them don’t want to learn and just see me as a tool.

I’ll bite the bullet on this one.

Maybe it’s not embarrassingly late because it was decades ago and I was a dumb teenager, but wiping your ass while sitting. Every time I took a shit, I’d stand up and then wipe.

Much easier now sitting down since the toilet seat basically keeps your cheeks spread for you.

Now just wish I had the right hookups to install a bidet toilet. That would be a real game changer.

You can get travel bidets for like 20 bucks or so, which are pretty much just a squeeze bottle with a nozzle. I wash mine and fill it back up when I go to wash my hands, so it’s always ready.

I’ve never used a ‘proper’ bidet, but don’t feel like I’m missing out in terms of cleanliness. Still feels pretty much like freshly showered, and certainly magnitudes cleaner than when using just toilet paper.

Half of people wipe from the front while sitting. The other half stand up and wipe from behind. Most people in either group never find out that the other half exists.

I wanted to share a relevant QI clip for this (it was brought up by a guest, not the host) but couldn’t find it.

If you have balls, just make sure you keep them clean.

If you have a vagina, that is how you get a UTI and the practice should best be avoided entirely.

If I had a vag, I would be wiping from the front toward the back. But I have balls, so not a concern anyway. Take paper -> reach behind me (rocking forward a little as necessary) -> wipe from balls towards spine. Presto, ass is wiped without standing up or dirtying the proverbial vagina.

My working theory is that the body just doesn’t sense temperature in the butthole very well, because why would it?

I considered that, but the water that comes out of our well is ice cold. Not the most pleasant of sensations to grace your sensitive bits.

I’d ideally like to get one of the electronic ones that can regulate temperature and has a few different modes. But I don’t currently have an electrical outlet anywhere close to the toilets, and rewiring the bathroom isn’t high on the budget priority at the moment.

Honestly the cold water is not an issue. I was concerned about it when we installed ours but even the first time I used it I was like, “Oh that’s fine what was I worried about.”

I’m obviously not the butthole police but in my opinion/experience cold water should not be a deal breaker.

Gently shaking the grinder while pushing down on the button?

Changes the grind time from 20 seconds according to the directions to 3-4 seconds.

Putting clothes I want to change into later/the following day in a packing cube. It saves going through drawers and the closet to decide what to wear when I’m trying to get my brain going or distracted.
